This is the ASIC company that was promised when Globalfoundries announced it would pivot away from pursuing leading-edge manufacturing processes (see GloFo rethinks its future, drops 7nm FinFET).

Avera will use its relationship with Globalfoundries to make ASIC offerings on 14/12nm and more mature technologies while providing access to alternate foundry processes at 7nm and beyond.

Avera Semi is built upon an unrivaled legacy of ASIC expertise, tapping into a world-class team that has executed more than 2,000 complex designs in its 25-year history.

Avera hits the ground running with 850 employees and annual revenue in excess of $500 million and is comprised of a team that has executed more than 2,000 designs over 25 years. Avera is looking to serve customers with designs in wired and wireless networking, data centers and storage, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and aerospace and defense.

Avera’s CEO is Kevin O’Buckley, who joined Globalfoundries as part of the acquisition of IBM Microelectronics in 2015. Previously, he spent nearly 20 years at IBM.
